Let’s face it, we all love walking into a bike shop a checking out all the cool stuff. Just the smell of the shop alone, sends the die-hard cyclist into their “happy place”. With all the types of bikes, parts, accessories, clothing, and tires, I have just one question, what does everyone want? The bike industry is jam-packed with so many vendors, brands, ans products, how can a shop ever have the right products in their inventory?
Well, I just happen to be the buyer for Jax Bicycle Center. I have learned, been challenged, had successes and defeats. But, over the past four years, I have enjoyed this position immensely. Someone once told me, “you’re lucky, you get payed to shop all day”. While that statement is only marginally accurate, there are definitely times when I feel like a kid in a candy shop. With all this said, there are MANY challenges to being a buyer. I have so many people to make and keep happy. Beside the owner of course, I have to answer to all the employees, vendors, sales reps, and most important, our clients. That is a lot of folks to keep happy. Think how much work it takes just to keep your spouse happy! I have built relationships, compromised relationships, fulfilled clients dreams, frustrated clients with the “wrong” inventory, made vendors happy by “trying” their new products, and made vendors mad by dropping their under performing products.
So, again I ask, what does everyone want? I personally love all kinds of bikes. Road Bikes, Mountain Bikes, BMX Bikes, and Cruisers, I have owned them all. Many cyclist are similar in that they own multiple types of bikes. My goal for the Jax client, is that we “have something for every kind of rider”. We believe that we can create a bike rider for life. With our extensive selection of inventory, we can service any kind of rider. Our focus is to carry the BEST products in each category of bikes, parts, and accessories. With all this said, I realize that I let some clients down with the selections of inventory I have chosen to carry. We can’t carry ever product and brand in the market place. We do offer special orders for many of the products we do not stock.
At the end of the day, Jax has been servicing clients for over 40 years. We have figured out how to get so many clients involved with cycling over the years. Selection, service, and the willingness to keep up with the industry trends, will continue to keep our clients cycling, no matter what they want. PD
